Why record cleaning is important:
Cleaning records is not primarily about removing dust and lint from the surface. Rather, it aims to clean the groove surfaces to recover lost musical details. With stereo records, the information is embedded in the groove edges. When the cartridge glides over it, it pushes dirt particles into these surfaces, where they stick. Each individual particle reduces the sound quality: the subtleties of the music are lost and the dynamics are reduced. Neither a cloth nor a brush can effectively remove this dirt. By cleaning the record correctly, deposits in the groove surfaces are dissolved and removed. The result is audibly improved playback.
